Thiruparankundram Murugan Temple: Rock-Cut Cave Shrine & Divine Celestial Wedding

The first of the Arupadai Veedu shrines: where Lord Murugan wed Deivayanai, 8th-century Pandya rock-cut sculptures, and holy car festivals.

The First Holy Abode of Lord Murugan

Situated just 8 kilometers south of Madurai railway station on a massive granite hill, Arulmigu Subramaniya Swamy Temple at Thiruparankundram is the foremost of the sacred Arupadai Veedu (Six Holy Abodes) of Lord Murugan. According to sacred lore, it is here that Lord Murugan married Deivayanai, daughter of King of the Gods Indra, following his victory over the demon king Surapadman.

8th-Century Rock-Cut Pandya Architecture

Carved into solid living rock by Pandya rulers in the 8th century, the sanctum sanctorum features breathtaking rock-cut bas-reliefs of Lord Murugan, Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, Goddess Durga, and Lord Ganesha carved on adjacent living rock faces, making it a rare shrine where both Shaivite and Vaishnavite deities are worshipped side-by-side.
